Punta Carena Lighthouse and Capri’s Maritime Edge
Punta Carena’s lighthouse marks the island’s southwestern headland, about three kilometres from Anacapri. Its tower gives this exposed coast a nineteenth-century maritime landmark distinct from Capri’s villas and ruins.
Construction began in 1862 and the lighthouse entered service in 1867. The octagonal masonry tower rises above a two-storey building, giving the headland a recognisable vertical form. Its elevated position explains its role as an offshore navigational light: the useful contrast is between the building’s compact footprint and the broad stretch of sea it was designed to serve.
