Old Bishop’s Palace
These fortified medieval ruins just south of Llandaff Cathedral make a focused architectural stop, with a substantial gatehouse and fragments of the former residence.
The palace adds a secular side to a cathedral visit: bishops needed a defended residence as well as a church. Its gatehouse, prison doorway and cellar arches let you distinguish different functions within the surviving walls, even though much of the original palace has disappeared.
What to look for
The two-towered gatehouse frames the former fortified entrance.
Low arches survive from the Great Hall cellar.
The ceremonial entrance arch contains Victorian doors.
Useful to know
Combine the ruins with nearby Llandaff Cathedral.
Check the council’s visitor information for gate access before making a special journey.
