What to see in Cartagena

Start with Cartagena's fortified old town, then decide whether your next priority is a hilltop fort, a museum or a coastal excursion. Those choices need different amounts of time.

Why go

Puerta del Reloj and the old-town plazas make an easy first walk; Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas adds the military view beyond the walls. Around Plaza de Bolívar, the Palace of the Inquisition offers a museum stop, while the cathedral and San Pedro Claver church show the religious side of the colonial center. Beaches and reef waters are separate outings.

Useful to know

  • Use the Clock Gate as a starting point for Centro's plazas and churches.
  • Pair the fort with the historic center only if you leave enough time for the separate visit.
  • Set aside a dedicated boat outing for the Rosario islands rather than adding them to an old-town walk.
