Cartagena Cathedral

Cartagena’s cathedral stands in the historic centre and is dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Its restrained nave and later tower reward a close look if entry is possible.

Cartagena Cathedral

Why go

The cathedral brings together several phases of the city’s history in one building. Construction began in the sixteenth century, Francis Drake’s attack interrupted the work, and the present tower came from a twentieth-century remodelling. Inside, the gilded altar contrasts with the simpler nave.

What to look for

  • Arcades supporting the central nave.
  • An eighteenth-century gilded altar and Carrara marble pulpit.
  • A tower added through later remodelling.

Useful to know

  • Check church visiting access directly; published office contact hours do not establish when visitors can enter.
  • If the doors are closed, view the cathedral exterior while walking the historic centre.
