Fuerte de San José de Bocachica
San José occupies a separate islet across the Bocachica channel from San Fernando. Reach its own landing by boat to see the paired defenses from the water.
Why go
San José is the channel-side counterpart to San Fernando, but it stands on a separate islet. Its angled platform and batteries were designed to cover the Bocachica entrance with fire from the opposite bank. Arrange a boat that explicitly lands at San José; a standard boat to Bocachica village and a walk to San Fernando will not reach it.
What to look for
Water-level battery facing San Fernando
Vaults and elevated cistern
Separate islet in the Bocachica channel
Useful to know
Boat directly to San José's islet; it is not walkable from San Fernando. Fort entry is free; boat fare and port departure tax are separate.
