Getting to Know Catania
Catania’s historic centre makes more sense when you read its Baroque streets beside older ruins and Etna’s lava stone. A short walk can reveal several layers of the city.
Piazza del Duomo shows the city rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, while the Roman Theatre reveals an earlier Catania within the later street grid. Mount Etna is more than a backdrop: its eruptions changed the landscape and supplied the dark stone that gives many central buildings their character.
Useful to know
Begin in Piazza del Duomo, then compare the rebuilt centre with a Roman site before planning a separate Etna visit.
