Getting Around Charleston
Charleston’s historic core is compact, but the airport, rail station, islands, and neighborhoods across the rivers make arrival and wider sightseeing separate transport choices.

Charleston International Airport and the Amtrak station are both in North Charleston, away from the downtown peninsula. CARTA serves the urban area, and the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge links the peninsula with Mount Pleasant. Knowing that layout helps you group central walks and plan transfers before adding an island or cross river stop.
Useful to know
Plan a transfer from the North Charleston airport or rail station to the peninsula; neither is in the historic center.
Check CARTA’s current routes and the downtown shuttle before relying on a specific service.
Group walkable downtown stops together and allow a separate journey for Mount Pleasant or the islands.
