Saint Mary's long parish history gives the building more weight than its compact street frontage suggests. The congregation rebuilt here in 1839 after fire destroyed its earlier church. Inside, the nave leads to a Crucifixion painting donated by John S. Cogdell to replace one lost in the blaze.
