Why go
Use the colonnade as a spatial reference, then understand the buildings behind it as a linked cluster. The substantial sweat bath differs from the tiny examples in the Thousand Columns court, and the neighboring ballcourt retains reliefs associated with players or warriors.
The full story
The sweat bath, or temazcal, was more elaborate than the small baths elsewhere in the court. Its historical layout began with a four-column portico and benches set at different heights along the back wall. A low opening led to the bath itself: a rectangular room under a low stone vault with a niche at the rear. North of the bath lay a medium-sized ballcourt. Its excavated side walls bear reliefs. The figures wear large feathered headdresses and may represent warriors or ballplayers. The carving was rough and appears to have been finished with modeled stucco. These two structures give the area a distinct character beyond the main halls. Their ancient layout does not indicate how closely visitors can approach them today.
