Why go

Follow the ancient causeway north to understand why this water-filled sinkhole held a special place in Chichén Itzá's ritual life. Its setting, away from the central temples, changes the rhythm of the visit and explains why a city on porous limestone needed more than one named cenote.

What to look for

  • A sacbé leads north from the Great Plaza
  • The cenote has a documented ritual-offering history

The full story

The Sacred Cenote lies north of Chichen Itza’s civic precinct, connected by a raised paved causeway of about 300 meters. In the limestone landscape of Yucatán, cenotes reach underground water, but this one had a particular ceremonial role. Maya and Spanish accounts written after the conquest describe offerings of objects and people to deities associated with rain. Archaeological recovery has found gold, jade, pottery, incense and human remains; studies of some remains found injuries consistent with human sacrifice. Edward Herbert Thompson dredged the cenote between 1904 and 1910, an episode that also became part of a dispute over objects removed from Mexico. Later accounts describe the cenote as a pilgrimage place even after Chichen Itza ceased to be a regional political center. The name is sometimes rendered Chen Ku or Well of Sacrifices. At the rim, the important point is the relationship between the waterhole, the causeway and the ceremonial precinct.
