Anyang, Henan
Anyang is the base for Yinxu, the late Shang capital site where oracle-bone inscriptions bring early Chinese writing into view. Go for archaeology rather than a broad city sightseeing circuit.
Yinxu gives Anyang a reason to travel north in Henan: the excavated capital and inscribed bones connect objects on display with questions once put to Shang diviners.
