Grand Canal of China
The Grand Canal links northern and eastern China through a chain of historic waterways. Explore a chosen canal town or urban reach rather than treating it as one stop.
Bridges, embankments and waterside streets show how an engineered transport route shaped settlements over centuries. The canal runs from Beijing toward Zhejiang, so its story is best understood through a specific local section. A visit can connect water infrastructure with the town that grew beside it.
What to look for
Notice the relationship between the waterway and adjoining streets.
Look for bridges, banks and other navigation works on a chosen section.
Compare an active canal reach with nearby historic buildings where both survive.
Useful to know
Select a named canal section or town before mapping the visit.
Check local access or boat arrangements for that section; the whole canal has no shared timetable.
