Great Wall of China
The Great Wall is a network of ramparts, passes and watchtowers across northern China. A satisfying visit starts with one accessible section, not the full line.
A chosen section lets you read the wall as a defensive system shaped by ridges and passes. Watchtowers, garrison points and the path between them show more than a distant panorama. Surviving fabric differs by section, so pick the landscape and amount of walking you want before setting out.
What to look for
Trace how a wall section follows the mountain ridge.
Look for watchtowers and fortified passes along the route.
Compare restored stretches with older surviving masonry where access permits.
Useful to know
Choose and map a specific wall section; there is no single Great Wall entrance.
Check that section's terrain and current access before committing to a walk.
