Why go
The temple's rooms appear suspended above the gorge, turning the cliff itself into part of the building. Its halls also bring Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian traditions into one complex. The setting is distinct from the cave sculpture at Yungang, so the two Datong-area sites offer a useful contrast if travel time permits.
What to look for
- Look at how the halls attach to the cliff face.
- Notice the linked wooden stairs and walkways.
- Find the hall associated with three religious traditions.
Useful to know
- Treat the cliffside complex as a separate excursion from Datong.
- Check current access to the elevated walkways before planning to enter them.
