Jiuzhaigou Valley
Jiuzhaigou's colored lakes, waterfalls and alpine forest fill a large valley in northern Sichuan. A visit needs a chosen route and enough time for more than one water landscape.
The valley's appeal lies in the succession of clear pools, lakes and waterfalls against mountain forest. Moving between them shows how varied the water and terrain can be within one protected landscape. Because the area is extensive, decide which sections matter most before setting a day plan.
What to look for
Compare the colors of different lakes and pools.
Watch water drop through the valley's multi-level waterfalls.
Notice the transition from water edges to alpine forest.
Useful to know
Select a realistic valley route before traveling; the whole area is not one viewpoint.
Check current park access and transport arrangements for the chosen sections.
