From the China World / Places
Pingyao, Shanxi
Pingyao’s walled old city preserves a traditional street plan and buildings tied to its commercial past. Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples widen the story but need separate travel beyond the walls.
The wall gives Pingyao an unusually readable urban boundary. Inside, older banking buildings show the town’s role in Chinese finance; outside, Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples add religious art and architecture. The contrast is valuable, but the temples are distinct places rather than stops on one short old-town walk.
What to look for
Walk a section of the old city’s defensive wall.
Look for historic banking buildings within the walled streets.
Compare the town core with Shuanglin or Zhenguo Temple if you venture out.
Useful to know
Give the walled town its own time, then add an outlying temple only with transport planned.
Check access to wall sections and individual heritage buildings separately.
