Summer Palace
Beijing's Summer Palace sets pavilions and bridges around Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill. Its broad grounds invite a slower landscape walk than a single palace stop.
Why go
The design works through a large contrast: open water below a hill lined with buildings. Moving between the lakeshore and higher ground reveals how paths, architecture and views were composed together. The Seventeen Arch Bridge adds a precise landmark within the much larger garden, so decide which part of the grounds matters most.
What to look for
Compare views across Kunming Lake with those from Longevity Hill.
Look for the Seventeen Arch Bridge along the water.
Notice how halls and pavilions are positioned to frame the landscape.
Useful to know
Choose a lakeside or hill-focused walk before entering the extensive grounds.
Check access to specific buildings as well as the main garden before setting the visit order.
