From the China World / Places
Suzhou, Jiangsu
Suzhou’s classical gardens arrange water, stone, plants and pavilions into miniature landscapes. Start with one garden such as the Humble Administrator’s or Lingering Garden, then decide whether a second adds a useful contrast.
Why go
These gardens reward close attention rather than a quick tour of many gates. A pavilion can frame water and rock differently with a few steps, making scale and viewpoint the experience. The Humble Administrator’s Garden and Lingering Garden are separate sites; visiting one well can be more revealing than rushing through both.
What to look for
Watch how water, rocks and planting change between garden rooms.
Notice the way a pavilion frames a carefully composed view.
Useful to know
Choose one principal garden first; add a second only if you have time for a slower comparison.
Check the selected garden’s current entry requirements individually.
