The Bund

The Bund is a Huangpu River promenade lined with historic buildings in central Shanghai. Walk it for the contrast between the old waterfront and the city across the water.

The Bund

Why go

The protected facades tell one part of Shanghai's urban story; the river and opposite shore give them a wider setting. Moving along the promenade reveals changes in the buildings rather than reducing the district to one skyline photograph. It is a clear central walk that can be combined with other nearby city stops.

What to look for

  • Compare the historic facades along the waterfront.
  • Watch river traffic on the Huangpu.
  • Look across to the contrasting skyline on the opposite bank.

Useful to know

  • Walk a section of the promenade instead of aiming at one point on the Bund.
  • Allow time to look both toward the buildings and across the river.
