From the China World / Places
Xi'an, Shaanxi
Xi'an connects the Terracotta Army with a walkable Ming city wall in the urban core. The two experiences reveal very different periods and need separate time blocks rather than one hurried stop.
Few cities let you place imperial-scale archaeology alongside a surviving defensive ring so clearly. The Terracotta Army tells the story of Qin Shi Huang's tomb complex; the Ming wall shows a later city boundary that can be read from above. Use the wall for the central-city experience and give the army its own excursion.
What to look for
Study the ranks of Terracotta Warriors at the museum site.
Trace the Ming wall’s gates and ramparts around the old city.
Useful to know
Plan the Terracotta Army as a separate excursion from the central wall.
Check current entry requirements for each site before fixing the order of the day.
