Yungang Grottoes
Yungang's rock-cut caves near Datong hold large Buddhist sculptures from the fifth and sixth centuries. The cliff facades make a focused alternative to a general city stop.
The carved figures and cave fronts show how Buddhist art was adapted to a monumental stone setting. Moving along the cliff reveals shifts in scale from cave to cave. The site pairs well in theme with Longmen or Mogao, but deserves its own time when traveling through Shanxi.
What to look for
Compare the sizes of Buddhist figures across the caves.
Look at the relationship between carved facades and inner chambers.
Notice variations in sculptural style along the cliff.
