Kastellet

Kastellet is a star-shaped citadel whose grassy ramparts now make an outdoor walking loop near Copenhagen’s harbour. It is best for military history seen through the ground plan.

Kastellet

Why go

Walk the ramparts to understand the star shape before crossing the barracks area. The red buildings and open earthworks make the former defensive site legible without a long indoor visit. It is a useful change from central Copenhagen’s museums, but the value lies in the full circuit rather than a quick glance from the gate.

What to look for

  • The grassy ramparts trace the citadel’s star shape.
  • Red barracks stand within the defensive plan.

Useful to know

  • Allow time to walk the ramparts rather than only crossing the entrance.
