Achilleion
Visit the Imperial Gardens at Empress Elisabeth's hilltop palace in Gastouri for Achilles sculptures and wide views. The gardens and exterior are the visit while the palace interiors undergo restoration.
Elisabeth built Achilleion around the myth of Achilles, and the grounds make that idea visible. Look for the wounded hero in the Dying Achilles sculpture, then contrast him with the triumphant bronze Achilles commissioned after Kaiser Wilhelm II acquired the palace. The setting also opens toward Corfu Town and the Ionian Sea.
What to look for
The Dying Achilles sculpture makes the palace's mythological theme tangible in the gardens.
Kaiser Wilhelm II's bronze Achilles offers a very different image of the hero.
The hilltop gardens look across green slopes toward Corfu Town and the sea.
Useful to know
Plan this as a garden and palace-exterior visit; the interiors are under restoration.
Allow time to walk the grounds and compare the two Achilles sculptures rather than expecting an indoor palace tour.
