Temple of Artemis Gorgo
See the surviving exterior remains of Corfu's Archaic temple near Garitsa, then visit the Archaeological Museum for its extraordinary Gorgon pediment. The site itself is a brief visual stop.
Built in the early sixth century BC, the stone Doric temple once stood in ancient Korkyra. Only foundations and fragments remain on site, so its scale takes some imagination. The museum's carved pediment supplies the missing drama: a Gorgon image that once filled the temple's triangular front.
What to look for
The remaining foundations trace part of the ancient temple's footprint.
A large altar survives near the temple remains.
The Gorgon pediment is displayed at the Archaeological Museum of Corfu.
Useful to know
Treat the ruins as an exterior view; do not count on entering the archaeological site.
See the pediment at the Archaeological Museum to understand what once rose above these remains.
