Why go
Anchovies give L’Escala a distinctive food connection, while prawns are associated with Palamós and rock fish with Begur. Inland crops and wine add another side of the region. Looking for those products offers a more useful starting point than relying on an old restaurant ranking.
The full story
The regional table brings together the sea and the land. L’Escala’s anchovies, Palamós prawns, fish from Roses and skate associated with Tossa de Mar reflect different coastal connections. On the inland side, onions from Figueres and Vilabertran, rice from the Montgrí area and apples from Girona help explain the breadth of local ingredients. This agricultural and fishing background also underlies the region’s reputation for inventive cooking. Ferran Adrià’s work at El Bulli and the Roca brothers’ cooking in Girona developed within a landscape already rich in products and culinary skills. Their influence is historical context, rather than a promise about present restaurant access. The Alt and Baix Empordà wine areas add another thread. Traditional Carignan and Grenache varieties underpin the local wine story, alongside later plantings. A meal built around local fish and an Empordà wine connects coastal and inland production without requiring a separate restaurant itinerary.
