Why go
The relationship between fishing and food gives a town visit its focus, especially the local anchovy and fish-stew traditions. Along the coast, broad beaches give way to small coves and rocky cliffs near Montgrí. Add Empúries if you want substantial archaeological time as well as a seaside stop.
What to look for
- The Alfolí de la Sal stored salt used to preserve fish landed at the port.
- Caterina Albert, who wrote as Víctor Català, came from L’Escala.
- Cala Montgó marks a different coastal setting from the Gulf of Roses.
Useful to know
- Reserve a separate part of the day for Empúries; the archaeological site is outside the town centre.
- Look for anchovies as a specific local food tradition when planning a meal.
