Why go
This history makes Torremolinos and Marbella more than interchangeable holiday names. Málaga promoters first sold the mild climate, early hotels developed around Torremolinos, and Marbella later cultivated an elite image. The disputed origins of the “Costa del Sol” name are a reminder that the region itself was gradually made into a destination.
The full story
Málaga province’s economy contracted in the late nineteenth century. Industry weakened, and phylloxera devastated vineyards important to the wine trade. In 1897, local businessmen formed the Sociedad Propagandística del Clima y Embellecimiento de Málaga to promote the city’s climate and encourage visitors. Baños del Carmen developed on Málaga’s eastern shore in the early twentieth century, and a golf course appeared at Torremolinos in 1928. The Torremolinos story also includes George Langworthy at Santa Clara and later hotels such as La Roca and Pez Espada. Marbella followed a different path: Ricardo Soriano and Alfonso de Hohenlohe helped build its reputation, with the Marbella Club opening in 1954. Accounts disagree on exactly who coined the Costa del Sol name; what matters for a visitor is how the label came to gather separate places into one marketed coast. The Civil War and World War II interrupted early growth before the postwar expansion transformed its scale.
