Why go

The village’s compact hillside form makes its history visible in the climb toward the castle. Casares also matters in Andalusian political history as the birthplace of Blas Infante. A walk through the old settlement combines these stories more naturally than a quick viewpoint stop, provided you are comfortable with steep streets.

What to look for

  • The castle site crowns the old hill village.
  • The village is associated with Blas Infante, a key figure in Andalusian regionalism.
  • Steep streets reveal how the settlement fits its slope.

The full story

Casares grew around a castle established during the Islamic period. Its position on a steep hill still shapes how the old village is experienced: streets climb toward the fortified site rather than following a flat grid. After the Castilian conquest in the late fifteenth century, the settlement went through the wider changes of the region, including the Morisco rebellion. A much later chapter is tied to Blas Infante, who was born here in 1885 and became a leading figure in Andalusian regionalism. These histories give a walk through Casares more meaning than its white façades alone. The castle is a separate attraction, while the surrounding village remains the broader historic setting. The town’s protected historic character also makes the surrounding streets part of the visit, rather than merely an approach to the castle.

Useful to know

  • Allow time for the uphill village walk before or after the castle.
  • Check the castle’s separate visitor information if entering it is central to your plan.
