Why go
The history museum's Phoenician, Roman and Islamic material gives context to the castle and other finds. Large artworks on building walls bring art into everyday streets, while the Peace Palace, Culture House and Varietés Theatre show where performance has had a place in town life.
The full story
Fuengirola's history museum was established to bring together finds linked to the castle, Cerro de Suel and Finca del Secretario. Its collections connect the town's ancient and Islamic periods with later local life, including fishing and craft traditions. If you have already seen Sohail Castle or Roman remains, those objects provide a closer view of the people and activities behind the sites. Culture is also visible outside formal collections. An open-air art project begun in 1988 placed large works on building facades, turning ordinary streets into a place to notice contemporary painting. The Peace Palace and Culture House have served as venues for performances and exhibitions. Varietés Theatre adds an English-language theatre tradition linked to the town's international community. Programmes and museum access can change, so the lasting reason to explore is the contrast between archaeological history, public art and live performance in a resort town.
