Ban Jelačić Square

Ban Jelačić Square is Zagreb’s central meeting place and a useful starting point for the historic centre. Trams cross the open space below the route toward Dolac and Upper Town.

Ban Jelačić Square

Why go

Starting here makes the geography of central Zagreb easier to grasp. The Lower Town streets meet the uphill route to the older quarter, while trams and people crossing the square show its everyday role. From the square, a walk can continue north to Dolac and then climb toward Upper Town.

What to look for

  • An equestrian statue stands amid the square’s tram crossings.
  • A meeting clock stands in the square.

Useful to know

  • Use it as the start of a central Zagreb walk, then continue north to Dolac and the Upper Town.
