Why go
A western beach outing can focus on scenery, swimming or time in the water rather than a checklist. Playa Lagun encloses a narrow bay between cliffs, Grote Knip offers a broader sandy shore, and Porto Mari links a beach stop with snorkeling and diving near Sint Willibrordus.
The full story
The stretch from Rif St. Marie toward Westpunt contains many of Curaçao's beach choices, but their forms differ. Playa Lagun occupies a narrow, rectangular bay framed by high cliffs. The rocky sides add underwater structure, making the setting relevant to snorkelers as well as people staying on the sand. Farther west, Grote Knip and Kleine Knip offer two separate sandy coves. Playa Jeremi, just north of Lagun, is another smaller bay, while Playa Kalki lies at Westpunt. These names describe distinct stops; selecting a few leaves more time to swim than moving continually between them. Porto Mari, near Sint Willibrordus, combines its bay with established snorkeling and diving activity. Decide how much support you want before choosing a beach, and check the services at your intended stop. Coastal access also varies: use established entrances and respect private land, especially when exploring away from the main western beach areas.
Useful to know
- Compare the western bays geographically before setting out; choose a few rather than trying to sample every beach.
- Bring drinking water to smaller coves and confirm food options before relying on a beach restaurant.
