Why go
Tugboat, just off Caracasbaai, offers a different underwater subject from an open reef: a recognizable vessel now covered in coral and surrounded by reef fish. Playa Porto Mari adds a double reef, while Playa Kalki provides another shore entry for divers interested in coral formations and deeper reef scenery.
The full story
Many Curaçao reefs can be reached directly from beaches, so an underwater outing does not always depend on a boat trip. The island's south and west coasts have shore entries including Cas Abao, Playa Kalki and Playa Porto Mari. Their appeal lies in the reef structure as much as in individual animals: hard and soft corals, sponges and fish create different shapes and movement across a dive. The Tugboat adds the outline of a working vessel to that landscape. Resting about five meters below the surface near Caracasbaai, it is shallow enough to interest snorkelers as well as divers. Coral covers the wreck, turning its structure into habitat for marine life. Turtles, rays, barracuda and octopus occur in Curaçao's waters, but a visit need not depend on finding a particular species. Watching how fish use a wreck or a reef is part of the experience.
Useful to know
- For Tugboat, decide between surface snorkeling and a dive; ask an operator about conditions and the entry before setting out.
- At Playa Kalki or Porto Mari, match the planned depth to your certification; a shore entry does not make every dive shallow.
- Keep fins and feet clear of coral when entering from a beach or moving around the Tugboat wreck.
