Karlštejn Castle
Karlštejn is a Gothic castle above a village southwest of Prague. Its royal-treasure role gives a focused reason to visit beyond the exterior view.
Why go
Charles IV founded the castle in 1348 to safeguard imperial regalia, Bohemian crown jewels, relics and other treasures. That purpose gives the fortified hilltop setting its meaning. Visitors drawn to medieval royal history can pair the approach through the village with a castle visit, subject to current access.
