Why go
The Small Fortress east of the Ohře and the walled Main Fortress west of it began as parts of an eighteenth-century defensive complex. Under Nazi occupation, the Small Fortress held Gestapo prisoners and a Jewish ghetto was created in the town. Seeing the two areas together clarifies the different histories carried by one place.
What to look for
- The Small Fortress east of the Ohře
- The walled Main Fortress and town west of the river
- The contrast between the original fortifications and their wartime use
Useful to know
- Plan the Small Fortress and the town as distinct parts of the visit, separated by the river.
- Check current memorial access and exhibition locations before deciding how much time to allow.
