Why go

The 1968 reforms aimed to loosen political, cultural and economic controls while retaining communist rule. Soviet-led troops ended the experiment, and censorship and political removals followed. Jan Palach's self-immolation in Wenceslas Square in January 1969 became a symbol of protest. That sequence gives the square a deeper twentieth-century meaning.

The full story

Alexander Dubček's rise to party leadership in 1968 opened a period of reform in communist Czechoslovakia. The aim was to loosen political, cultural and economic controls while the Communist Party retained authority. Soviet leaders and their allies eventually decided to end the experiment through military intervention. Occupation met political opposition, but the reform programme was reversed: censorship returned, reformers were removed and Soviet troops remained. The story continued into the following year. Student Jan Palach set himself on fire in Wenceslas Square in January 1969 in protest at the loss of self-determination. His act made the square a place of memory as well as a central Prague public space. The square is therefore a useful anchor for understanding the human response to the invasion, while the broader Prague Spring refers to a countrywide reform effort. Keep the reform, intervention and subsequent repression in their proper order.
