Why go
Start with the neighborhood rather than an old bar list. Deep Ellum’s Main, Elm and Commerce streets form a compact district near downtown, while Uptown centers on McKinney Avenue. The West End adds historic redbrick streets; Lower Greenville offers another concentrated stretch away from the downtown core.
The full story
The West End’s turn-of-the-century brick buildings give an evening walk a layer of Dallas history. The former Texas School Book Depository is part of that streetscape, linking the district to the city’s Kennedy history. East of downtown, Deep Ellum occupies a different set of streets along Main, Elm and Commerce. Its music association gives the area a distinct reason to check current performance listings. Uptown, around McKinney Avenue, is another option close to central Dallas, while Lower Greenville has a long stretch of establishments south of Richmond Avenue. These areas work best as alternatives for an evening, not stops in a single walking circuit. Addison is farther north and belongs in a separate plan. Decide which street setting interests you, then check current venue programs and arrange the trip back before you go.
Useful to know
- Check current performance listings if live music is the reason for choosing Deep Ellum.
- Plan a ride home from Lower Greenville or Addison rather than assuming either is part of a downtown walk.
