From the Denmark World / Areas
Ertholmene
Ertholmene is a small Baltic archipelago northeast of Bornholm, with fortified inhabited islands and a protected bird island. The harbour and granite walls give it a distinct maritime character.
Christiansø and Frederiksø were fortified as a Danish naval outpost in the late seventeenth century. Their walls, cannons and towers remain part of an inhabited island setting, while nearby Græsholm is reserved for birds. The short distances on land contrast with the effort of reaching the archipelago.
What to look for
Granite walls and old cannons frame the Christiansø harbour.
A pedestrian bridge links inhabited Christiansø and Frederiksø.
Græsholm is a bird reserve rather than a settlement.
Useful to know
Check current sea transport from Bornholm before planning an outing.
Keep to permitted areas and respect the protected bird island.
