Esbjerg
Esbjerg is a west Jutland port built around a harbour established in the nineteenth century. It suits visitors interested in maritime history and the nearby North Sea coast.
Why go
Unlike Denmark's older market towns, Esbjerg grew rapidly after its harbour was founded in 1868. Fishing, shipping and agricultural exports shaped the city. Its museums and the coast toward Fanø make it a useful west Jutland base rather than a stop chosen for an old medieval centre.
What to look for
The harbour is the reason the modern city grew here.
Esbjerg's maritime and local museums explore the port's wider story.
Fanø lies across the Wadden Sea from the city.
Useful to know
Combine the city with maritime museums if the port's history is your main interest.
Plan Fanø as a separate island outing and check the current crossing.
