From the Denmark World / Travel essentials
Getting around Denmark
Trains link major Danish cities, with local transport and ferries filling the gaps to smaller towns and islands. The right mode depends on whether your route stays on the main rail corridors or reaches a coast or island.
Why go
Use rail as the starting point for Copenhagen, Odense, Aarhus and Aalborg, then plan local buses or ferries for places beyond the main lines. Islands such as Bornholm add another transfer. Compare the full journey, including the last connection, before choosing a base.
Useful to know
Use a current journey planner for train, bus and ferry connections; transfer times matter more than a single headline journey time.
Check regional ticket rules for local trips before boarding, as ticket systems can differ between areas.
In cities, watch for cycle lanes when crossing streets or turning across them.
