Roskilde
Roskilde is a historic city west of Copenhagen where a Gothic cathedral and Viking ship finds tell two sides of Denmark's past. Both deserve time on a focused visit.
Roskilde Cathedral holds the tombs of Danish monarchs, while the Viking Ship Museum preserves the remains of five eleventh-century ships. Together they show royal, religious and seafaring history in one city. The contrast makes Roskilde much richer than a quick cathedral stop.
What to look for
The Gothic cathedral contains tombs of Danish monarchs.
Five eleventh-century ships are preserved at the Viking Ship Museum.
The city's history reaches back to the Viking Age.
Useful to know
Give the cathedral and Viking Ship Museum separate time; they cover different eras and experiences.
Use the central pedestrian streets as the link between historic stops.
