Stevns Klint
Stevns Klint is a chalk cliff on eastern Zealand where a thin dark layer records the mass extinction at the end of the Cretaceous. The coast also holds a striking church and Cold War history.
Few landscapes make deep time as visible as Stevns Klint's pale chalk and dark fish-clay boundary. Højerup Church stands close to the eroding edge, while the former Stevnsfortet fortress brings the story into the twentieth century. These layers make the cliff more than a viewpoint.
What to look for
A thin dark fish-clay layer marks the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary.
Højerup Church stands by the eroding cliff edge.
Stevnsfortet's tunnels reveal a Cold War use for the chalk.
Useful to know
Stay on marked access around the eroding cliff and check conditions before descending toward the shore.
Treat the fortress as a separate visit if you want to explore its underground history.
