Why go
The Denver Art Museum and Clyfford Still Museum make a focused art pairing; History Colorado Center answers a different question about the state’s past. Santa Fe and RiNo offer district-scale exploration. Those choices make more sense than trying to cover every museum and gallery in one day.
The full story
Denver built cultural spaces early. Apollo Hall hosted plays soon after the city’s founding, and Horace Tabor opened an opera house in the 1880s. A later civic beautification effort brought parks, parkways and public buildings into the center, helping explain why culture and civic space meet around today’s Civic Center. For a visitor, the strongest contrast is between collections. The Denver Art Museum covers a broad range of art, while the Clyfford Still Museum concentrates on the abstract expressionist’s work. History Colorado Center uses exhibits and artifacts to tell state history. These institutions are close enough to compare in one area, but each deserves its own attention. Elsewhere, Santa Fe and RiNo are named arts districts suited to a looser walk. Their appeal is the streets and changing mix of galleries, rather than a single fixed museum route.
