Why go
A trip between Santo Domingo, Santiago and a coastal base works differently from a short local ride. Larger intercity buses suit major corridors; guaguas can link smaller towns but may be crowded and require more patience. Driving adds flexibility for dispersed beaches or mountain areas, along with more responsibility for road conditions.
The full story
Scheduled intercity buses serve major towns and cities, while smaller guaguas offer local or regional links. Company routes, fares and departures need a fresh check. Check the boarding point too. A long journey across regions may involve a transfer rather than a direct service. In and around towns, motorbike taxis known as motoconchos are another local mode, but they carry different comfort and safety considerations from a bus or car. A rental car gives freedom to reach scattered places such as the waterfalls near Jarabacoa or beaches outside Miches. It also puts the driver in charge of navigating unfamiliar roads, especially after dark. Build time for transfers and choose transport based on the actual stops, not simply the distance between destination names.
Useful to know
- Confirm current bus routes and departure points for each leg before travel day.
- Keep luggage and comfort in mind when deciding between an intercity bus and a guagua.
- If driving to remote sites, plan the return in daylight and check road conditions.
