Getting Around Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo is a road hub as well as a large city. Plan the cross-city leg separately from a walk around the Zona Colonial.

Why go

The city's main road links point in distinct directions: DR-1 toward Santiago and the northwest, DR-2 toward the southwest, and DR-3 toward the eastern coast. Within Santo Domingo, Avenida George Washington follows the waterfront as the Malecón, while Avenida 27 de Febrero and John F. Kennedy cross much of the urban area. Shared taxis, buses and motorcycle taxis appear in the city's transport mix, but their routes and conditions need checking before travel.

Useful to know

  • Map the correct highway before leaving the city: DR-1, DR-2 and DR-3 serve different regions.
  • Allow a separate transfer for sights across the Ozama River or well beyond the Zona Colonial.
  • Check current routes and fares locally before relying on shared transport.
