Why go
Use rail for the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor, buses for selected connections, taxis for door-to-door gaps, and abras around Dubai Creek. The city’s scale is the main planning issue: old Dubai, beach districts and newer developments do not all connect neatly in one mode.
The full story
Dubai’s public transport expanded with the Metro, while the city’s development still reflects a strong reliance on roads. The result is a mixed network rather than one universal solution. The Metro is useful along Sheikh Zayed Road and reaches key points such as the airport, Burj Khalifa and Mall of the Emirates. The Green Line serves the older urban core, while the tram connects parts of Dubai Marina and JBR with the rail network. Buses fill some gaps, but walking distances and the final approach to an address can be substantial. Taxis are therefore a practical complement, particularly outside rail corridors. Around the Creek, an abra is both a transport link and a short waterfront crossing. Plan each day by area and check current routes before leaving.
