Why go
This distinction saves time in a large city. The Gold and Spice Souks near the Creek are compact historic markets, while malls are separate destinations and Meena Bazaar is a Bur Dubai retail district. Each has different pacing, atmosphere and expectations about bargaining.
The full story
Shopping in Dubai is organised across distinct districts rather than one central retail street. The Gold Souk and Spice Souk lie in Deira near the mouth of Dubai Creek, where older trade routes and market lanes remain visible. Across the Creek, Bur Dubai includes Meena Bazaar, known for South Asian fashion and handicrafts. Large malls bring together international shops, food and indoor leisure in a controlled setting. This geographic split matters when planning: the souks combine naturally with an abra crossing and the historic districts, while a mall visit usually occupies its own part of the day. Bargaining is customary in souks but not in mall shops. For gold, compare the item’s weight and workmanship charges before agreeing to a purchase.
