Why go
See how one building organizes the whole Downtown skyline, then study its stepped silhouette and the relationship between the tower, Dubai Mall and Burj Lake. Even without entering, its scale becomes clearest from the surrounding waterfront rather than directly beneath it.
What to look for
- The Y-shaped plan narrows through a sequence of setbacks as the tower rises.
- The reflective cladding was designed for Dubai's intense summer conditions.
- From Burj Lake, the tower reads as the centrepiece of the wider Downtown development.
The full story
Construction began in 2004 and Burj Khalifa opened in 2010 as the centrepiece of Downtown Dubai. Adrian Smith led the architectural design at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, with Bill Baker as chief structural engineer. Its Y-shaped plan and buttressed central core help the tower resist wind, while a sequence of setbacks creates the narrowing form visible across the city. The design also draws on Islamic architectural patterning, including the spiral geometry of the Great Mosque of Samarra. Known during construction as Burj Dubai, the completed tower was named for Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Together, its engineering, regional references and political name explain why it is more than a height record. It also marks Dubai's shift toward a service and tourism economy.
Useful to know
- Treat the tower exterior and the ticketed observation decks as separate choices when planning.
- Step back to the Burj Lake waterfront for a clearer view of the full height and setbacks.
- Combine the exterior view with Dubai Mall and The Dubai Fountain to avoid a second trip across Downtown.
