Why go
Pause here to see a civic monument designed for the point where major roads once converged near Dubai's first land crossing between Deira and Bur Dubai. Its value is visual and urban: the clocktower makes sense as part of a walk through Al Rigga, not as a long standalone stop.
What to look for
- Four curved concrete legs lift the clock above the roundabout.
- The monument stands at the approach to routes leading toward Al Maktoum Bridge.
- Its open form is best read from the surrounding public streets.
The full story
Deira Clocktower was built in 1965, when this junction carried unusual symbolic weight. Before the Dubai–Abu Dhabi road changed the city's traffic pattern, major routes into Dubai met in Deira, and the nearby Al Maktoum Bridge provided the first land connection across Dubai Creek between Deira and Bur Dubai. Architect Ziki Homsi designed the monument, and the Architecture Design Construction office also built it. The structure therefore belongs to a period when roads, bridges and roundabouts were helping redraw how the two sides of the creek related to each other. Seen today amid multilane traffic, its position matters as much as its clock: it marks an earlier gateway into the city and a transport link that helped Deira grow as a commercial center.
Useful to know
- View the clocktower from the pavement and do not attempt to cross into the roundabout.
- Fold the stop into an Al Rigga walk; there is little reason to budget separate sightseeing time.
