The full story

Dubai Marina was created by excavating a long central waterway inland from the Gulf and building a dense residential district around it. The plan was inspired by Concord Pacific Place on Vancouver's False Creek, but the Dubai version translated that model into a much taller, hotter and more intensely engineered setting. Public promenades follow the canal, with boats moored beside cafés, restaurants and residential towers. The first phase introduced six apartment buildings whose names drew from precious stones and Arabic scents. Later construction produced the dense high-rise cluster that now defines the skyline. The canal remains the district's central public space, not merely a backdrop to private towers. Walking beside it reveals how water, landscaping and ground-floor activity soften the scale of the buildings. Jumeirah Beach Residence occupies the seaward side of the wider district, so a combined visit moves from the enclosed marina basin to a beachfront facing the open Gulf.
