Why go
The appeal is the setting as much as the choreography: water moves across a long lakefront stage while Burj Khalifa rises behind it. The performance adds an easy outdoor finale to time in Dubai Mall or around the Downtown waterfront.
What to look for
- Different jet types create sweeping arcs, rapid pulses and occasional high vertical bursts.
- The soundtrack moves between Arabic and international music.
- Burj Khalifa and the surrounding towers form the backdrop across Burj Lake.
The full story
The Dubai Fountain was developed as part of the Burj Lake setting at the centre of Downtown Dubai. WET Design, the company also associated with the Bellagio fountains in Las Vegas, designed the system. Testing began in 2009, and the fountain was inaugurated that May alongside Dubai Mall. Its long line of high-pressure jets can form low, travelling patterns or send selected bursts far above the lake. Thousands of lights and coloured projectors turn those movements into a night-time composition rather than a static water feature. The repertoire has included classical pieces, contemporary music and songs in Arabic and other languages. One early selection, “Inshed An Aldar,” was written for the inauguration of Burj Khalifa in 2010. Seen from the waterfront, the changing music and jet patterns explain why the fountain is best understood as a performance venue embedded in the architecture of Downtown, not simply as decoration beside the mall.
Useful to know
- Check the official performance timetable on the day; shows are discrete events, not continuous opening hours.
- Compare views from the Dubai Mall promenade, Souk Al Bahar bridge and Burj Park waterfront.
- Pair the show with Dubai Mall or Burj Khalifa so the performance does not require a separate Downtown trip.
